Casual Christian Comedy

Casual Christian Comedy

Casual christian comedy can be a light in the darkness.

There’s comedy (and comedians) for everyone.

Taste is subjective, sure; some prefer raunch and yet others prefer funny, clean comedians. One is not necessarily better than the other, but many (most) church groups opt for clean comedy. And if you’re a person of faith but also enjoy comedy, there are still countless casual Christian comedy offerings. Whether you are in the mood for Christian comedy movies or Christian stand-up comedians, you can be assured there’s much for you to choose from.

And if you’re looking to get better educated on casual Christian comedy, you’ve come to the right place. Here, we will give some weight to Christian comedy movies and Christian comedians. This is, of course, but a cursory sampling of the Christian comedy offerings; the genre is as rich as Christ’s teachings (but with admittedly much more laughs).

First, let’s explore Christian comedy movies a bit.

Christian Comedy Movies

As many Christians know, there are plenty of Christian comedy movies. However, maybe you’re new to the faith, not the biggest movie buff, or, for whatever reason, you’re just not that familiar with Christian movies. Are these movies the whole family can enjoy? Most certainly. If Christian comedy movies are anything, they’re most definitely “family friendly.”

Covering all of these offerings would exceed the scope of this piece, but we’d be remiss to not mention some of the more well-known and well-celebrated of this sub-genre.

In no particular order, here are some popular Christian comedy movies worth checking out from the last ten years:

  1. Mom’s Night Out (2014): A busy mom has a wild (by some standards) night out with her friends, leaving their husbands in charge of the kids.
  2. The Resurrection of Gavin Stone (2017): An over-the-hill child star has to do community service at a local church, feigning being Christian to snag the role of Jesus in their annual play.
  3. Church People (2021): A youth pastor aims to renew his faith, learning lessons along the way. A film that stars not one but two Baldwin brothers (no, neither is Alec) as well as a former member of NSYNC (not Justin or Lance).
  4. Family Camp (2022): Two wildly different families have to camp together as the dads try to keep their families (and marriages) sane as both families compete for the much-sought-after camp trophy.
  5. Small Group (2018): A mockumentary comedy where a documentarian seeks to expose how Christians really live but is himself exposed and has to deal with the consequences.

Church People has been particularly lauded and has even been called “one of the best Christian comedies ever made” by ReligionUnplugged. As stated, they are all fine family movies, as the two words (besides “faith” or “God”) perhaps most associated with this genre are “clean” and “family.”

Now, let’s discuss some of the bigger names in Christian stand-up comedy.

Christian stand-up comedians can have you laughing on the floor with laughter.

Christian Stand-up Comedians

Michael Jr.

More than just a mere stand-up comedian, Michael Jr. excels at “combining story with thought-provoking life principles.” Moreover, he shows “what it means to be a comedic thought leader.”

“One of the funniest comedians I know,” says Terry Crews’ testimonial on Michael Jr.’s website. Moreover, he has over 35 million views on his YouTube channel and has multiple comedy specials, as well as having acted in several films.

Brad Stine

Stine has been a working stand-up comedian for decades, and according to the piece Brad Stine: The Unapologetic Voice of Comedy and Faith, he “stands out as a voice that blends humor and faith in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.”

A former magician, Stine has appeared on the TV show Dry Bar Comedy, released several specials, and authored four books.

Jeff Allen

Allen has been performing stand-up comedy for nearly half a century and has over 27 million views on YouTube. According to Allen (via his YouTube description), his humor addresses “moments of faith and hope from a guy who’s made every mistake in the book.” He has also written a book, Are We There Yet? My Journey from a Messed-Up to Meaningful Life, published in 2013.

Chonda Piece

Pierce is nothing if not prolific. As of 2013, Pierce was the RIAA’s (Recording Industry Association of America) highest-selling female comedian ever.

According to Time, “Her material is 100 percent clean and strongly influenced by Christianity.” One of the most respected Christian female comedians of all time, she is also an actress and author.
