Gone But Not Forgotten: Comedians Who Died in 2022

2022 saw the passing of several revered comedians known to millennials, Gen Z, and baby boomers alike. For many of us, these comedians will forever reside in our hearts, thanks to having graced our childhoods. They appeared in beloved shows and movies that we grow more nostalgic about the older we get. Without further ado, let’s give these comedians who died in 2022 their due.

Comedian and actor Gilbert Gottfried is known for several things. He’s remembered for an ill-timed 9/11 joke that he skillfully turned around by telling the infamous “The Aristocrats” joke (the subject of a documentary released in 2005)—a joke which famously features the same non-sequitur punchline but is preceded by a new—and often mind-blowingly vulgar—setup. Gottfried is also beloved for his screechy voice, delivered with pitch-perfect intensity in the original Aladdin animated films. He had a storied career as a stand-up comedian spanning over five decades and is dearly missed.

Another comedian and actor who died in 2022 was “Dirty Daddy” Bob Saget. Saget was often known for his portrayal of Danny Tanner, one of the cast members of Full House, as well as hosting America’s Funniest Home Videos for eight seasons. However, Saget well earned his moniker “Dirty Daddy” with his raunchy stand-up act.  And who can forget his infamous cameo in Half Baked? His memoir, Dirty Daddy, came out in 2014 and is well worth a read. RIP to one of the greats.

Robbie Coltrane was perhaps best known for his role as Hagrid in the Harry Potter films. However, Coltrane was also renowned for his fluid accents and versatility, playing Bond villain Valentin Zukovsky in GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough, as well as roles in Great Expectations, Henry V, and The Adventures of Huck Finn. Coltrane was one of Britain’s most celebrated comedians, praised for his intelligence, inventiveness, and boldness. Coltrane died in 2022, but his indelible roles ensure he will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Louie Anderson may not be as familiar to younger audiences, yet he was nonetheless a celebrated comedian and a great loss to the comedy world. Named by Comedy Central as one of the “100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time,” Anderson also hosted Family Feud for years and appeared in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Coming to America, and the TV shows Scrubs and Baskets—the latter earning him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Anderson had a nearly decade-long residency in Las Vegas and was celebrated for his self-deprecating style.

The final comedian who died in 2022 that we’d like to pay homage to is Leslie Jordan. Maybe best known for his Emmy-winning role as Beverley Leslie on Will and Grace, Jordan was an LGBTQ+ icon remembered for his distinctive Southern drawl and oversized personality. He also starred in several seasons of American Horror Story, The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time, and Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. Known for his one-liners, light-hearted panache, and endearing storytelling, Jordan leaves yet another hole in the fabric of comedy and pop culture.
